| What's New? The New Changes for Mattituck-Cutchogue Little League 2013 and Why We Made Them... The MCLL board has deliberated over the past several months to make some major changes to our organization. New 70ft Intermediate Baseball Division Little League International is taking appropriate measures to see additional opportunities are provided to help athletes transition from Little League to "school ball". One of those changes is the addition of a new Intermediate level baseball division that plays on a larger size field for ages 10-12 (70 ft bases as opposed to 60 ft). The majority of most Little League teams will continue to play on conventional 60 bases. This new division represents more opportunities for kids to keep progressing and develop their skills in a competitive format that better prepares them for the eventuality of standard 90 ft baseball. This year, MCLL will have one team in this division and players for this division will be selected by tryouts only. All players on this team are required to be registered and participate on a standard Majors Baseball (60ft) MCLL team during the same season. Games for this Intermediate team will only be played on weekends and will not conflict with the Majors games. There will be an additional registration fee (amount not yet determined) for this division which will be paid after team selection. Mandatory Evaluation Boys Baseball Ages 9*-12 (*age 9 minimum 3rd grade) Sunday February 10th Mattituck High School Main Gym 4:30-7:00pm. Please wear sneakers, comfortable clothes, bring something to drink, and a glove (own helmet and bat optional). We will be selecting our 60 ft Majors Baseball teams by a blind draft based on evaluations of player skills by our coaches. The 70 ft Intermediate team will be selected by tryouts only. This team will be comprised of advanced skilled players as evaluated and ranked by our coaches. Baseball Coed Minors ages 7-9 The one major change for this division will be that it will be Coach/Kid Pitch (last year was pitching machine). At the start of the season the teams will be primarily "Coach Pitch". The goal will be throughout the season for each team to develop several "kid pitchers". This division will remain "in house", meaning you will not travel outside of our hamlet for games. An attempt to split teams so that a fair distribution of "pitchers" will help to balance the teams. Softball New this year is minors softball division ages 8-10 (also eligible are girls age 7 in 2nd grade with one year experience in Pitching Machine level 2012). Our enrollment for this age group in 2012 was hit hard by competing sports (no team fielded last year), so we are attempting to field enough players (10 min) for our own team this year. If we are unable to field our own team we will combine (place girls) on teams from Riverhead. I am hopeful that we can get enough players and keep our girls together...so please spread the word. Majors Division ages 10-12 only major change will be Interleague games with Riverhead, Eastport, and Longwood TBall Coed Ages 5 & 6 Season starts late April (practice/game schedules not available until mid April) All games local (Mattituck & Laurel) New Interleague Towns Baseball Majors and Intermediate (70ft) will be playing interleague exclusively with Riverhead. Softball Majors and Minors will be playing against Riverhead, Eastport & Longwood. It is in the majority of our MCLL boards opinion this new interleague schedule will be offering our kids more opportunities than they've had in the past with MCLL . Game Locations Home games will still be played in either Mattituck or Laurel. After a long battle, Mattituck Park District finally recut the field at Yacht Club (Pec. Bay Blvd) to be multi-purpose. We will use this field for as many levels possible, including the new 70ft. Weekday away games at Stotsky Park in Riverhead. Weekend away games either at EPCAL park in Calverton (baseball), Eastport or Longwood (softball only). Coaches Needed Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering to coach (or assistant coach) We will be having a coach's meeting in late February. As we did last year, we will be having a coaching clinic and first aid class. Please consider giving your time as it can be a rewarding experience for both the adults and the kids! We appreciate your support and hope that the best is yet to come! Kathy Ryan MCLL President |
